Yellow Star Orphans Overcome Adversity

Two foals have been orphaned at Yellow Star Stud through unfortunate circumstances - however their future looks bright as they are strong and healthy, and very playful, and from the photos appear to get up to some mischief!

We contacted Yellow Star to find out more about them after photos appeared on Yellow Star Stud's Facebook page. Ashley de Klerk of Yellow Star tells us a bit more about the two of them.

"The filly, the smaller lighter bay one, was born on the 30th of October. She is out of Sheeza Babe (Fanatic Dane - Dramatic Fashion by Centenary/Complete Warrior) and by Second Empire(IRE). She has a lovely nature and is very inquisitive but can be quite cheeky when she wants to, so you have to watch her sharp end at all times."

The filly's dam Sheeza Babe had 4 wins and 4 places and earned R162 590 in stakes. Her dam Dramatic Fashion is the dam of 2 winners and is herself a half-sister to 6-time winner Fashion Edition. The third dam is Well Dressed, a 9-time winner and placing 18 times. She is the dam of 5 runners and 5 winners including Fashion Maker who won a Grade 2 and two Grade 3 races, as well as Fashion Editor who was exported to Mauritius and had 5 wins there. This is the family of Best Dressed, Prince Henri, Hamildon Hill, Divine Heights and Grade 1 Champions Cup winner African Appeal.
Sadly Second Empire(IRE) passed away early in the breeding season this year, and he is a sad loss to the breeding industry. His son Tropical Empire(AUS), who also resides at Yellow Star will continue to fly the flag for him.

"The colt is out of Good Hope Diamond (Broad Reach(NZ) - Candy Rose(AUS) and he is by Carpocrates(USA). He was born on the 4th of November but his mother ruptured whilst giving birth as he was too big. He is a handsome young colt who is friendly and loves getting attention but his new "sister" has shown him who's boss!"

The colt by Carpocrates(USA) has a stripe that falls off his nose to the right, very reminiscent of his famous 5th generation grand-sire Northern Dancer. The colt's dam has a 2010 yearling filly by Newton(IRE). She is by Broad Reach(NZ) out of Candy Rose (AUS) by Mighty Avalanche(AUS). Candy Rose(AUS) is the dam of 2 winners - Mighty Shoe by Shoe Danzig(USA), and Hot Stuff by Fire Arch(NZ).

Ashley goes onto say "They are put out into a paddock close by during the day and are stabled together at night. Since they were orphaned, they are now fed powdered milk which they demand quite regularly. The foals were fed from a bottle for the first couple of days and then they were transferred onto drinking out of a bucket. It's not ideal to have orphans but at least these two have each other. They are both growing well and getting stronger each day."

We look forward to seeing these two lovely individuals at the races in time to come.
