Shadwell Stud and Spring Valley Stud recently announced the death of KZN stallion MUHTAFAL.
The 23 year old son of Mr Prospector began his career at Summerhill Stud and continued at Spring Valley where he was subsequently retired, Muhtafal was a leading stallion in KZN for many years - highly respected by breeders and trainers across the country.
His top progeny included Paris Perfect who finished third in the Gr1 Dubai World Cup, along with Group winners Outcome, Disappear, Lets Rock 'n Roll, Fair Brutus, Thunder Key and First Again - just a few of his Graded winners amongst his many winners produced country wide.
Racing only three times, Muhtafal set two track records over 1200m, including at Keeneland.
His third and last start in a Group Three saw Muhtafal holding the lead over champion sprinter Mr Greeley - for almost a mile before injury struck, ending a very promising racing career.
The last son of Mr Prospector to stand at stud in South Africa and most successful in the Southern Hemisphere, Muhtafal will always be remembered for his good looks, powerful physique and the speed he put into his progeny.
Mick Goss was famously quoted as saying: "If I had to go to war I would take Muhtafal."

Thank you to Shadwell Stud for their support over the years, having sent this wonderful stallion to stand in South Africa with whom breeders and owners have had much success.
Muhtafal's influence as a broodmare sire will be felt on our racetracks and breeding sheds for years to come.
It was an honour and pleasure to stand Muhtafal for the last few years.
