Farm Feature: Bush Hill Stud Share

Bush Hill Stud - owned and managed by Warwick and Karin Render - has been a successful commercial operation for over thirty years, the last thirteen under the Renders' management, who between them, boast in excess of forty years of experience in the horse breeding industry in South Africa. Their young son Jason is also very involved in the activities on the farm.

Charles Byrne, from Ireland, has recently joined them on the farm and brings a wealth of international experience with him in both stud and racing work.

Bush Hill is very conveniently situated with easy access to all stallions standing in KZN and offers a full range of services for the discerning owner from the boarding of mares (permanent and seasonal), foaling, weanlings, yearlings/two year old board and sales preparation, as well as stallion board and management.

Their facilities include the main stable complex on the stud which offers forty five stables allowing for all individual horse needs to be catered for, be it those fillies coming out of training to stud for the first time or the young horse preparing for the sales or to start his/her racing career.

They are also able to offer a specialist foal ICU unit for sick/premature/problem new born foals.

The stud office is incorporated here too, to allow easy management of the yard at all times. The main yard has post and rail turn-out paddocks in close proximity and there are individual stallion stables within individual post and rail paddocks.

The balance of the farm is made up of large paddocked pastures, of which 30ha are under irrigation allowing for top quality grazing the year round.

The Mouseketeer

"We breed horses capable of competing at the highest level both locally and internationally and we provide an honest, personal and professional service," explains Warwick. "We provide the horses on the stud with the individual and knowledgeable care they need in order to equip them for the rigours of racing at all levels."

The stud borders on the Little Mooi River which provides water for the irrigation of winter pastures, while many large old trees add to the natural beauty and assets of the property and providing safe and effective shelter for the horses all year round.

Some of the Grade 1 winners to come off the farm having been bred by Bush Hill and/or consigned on behalf of clients at sales include Wolf Whistle - (Grade 1 winner and International Stakes winner) Stellite, Zirconeum (Gr 1 winner and International Stakes placed) and Seal. Other racehorses of significance include Storm Bringer Gr 2 and Gr 1 placed, and the Grade 2 winner of the 2011 Emerald Cup - Africa's richest race on sand - The Mouseketeer as well as Lt Jerry Mouse, Pure Hokum, E. Fuel, Lady Linney, Super Home and Blade Force.

They maintain a quality broodmare band of approximately 85 mares in total which includes their boarding mares.

Some of their mares include the likes of Sweet Sheila, the dam of Gr 1 winners Stellite and Zirconeum. She is currently in foal to Kahal, and will visit King's Chapel this year. Her daughter Plutonium whose first foal is the multiple stakes placed Stella Mia has travelled to Cape Town this year to be covered by Trippi as she was barren in 2010.

Stella Mia will retire to stud at Bush Hill this season and will go be sent to Kahal to start her breeding career.

Look Sharp, the dam of stakes winners Lt Jerry Mouse and The Mouseketeer, is in foal to Mullins Bay and will go back to Kahal this season. Wolf Whistle

Their young stallion band includes the following:

Mon Sang(USA) - A.P. Indy(USA)by - Trouble Woman by Dayjur (USA) - was a winner in Australia. He is a striking son of A.P. Indy from a top American family. He has both Danzig and Mr Prospector in his dam line and as such is a fairly easy stallion to mate to on paper. Though he has produced a two year old stakes winning filly over sprint distances in Country Girl it appears as expected that the bulk of his progeny take a little more time to come to hand and benefit from going a distance of a mile and more. Mon Sang's immediate family includes US Champion 3 Year Old filly and Grade 1 Kentucky Derby winner Winning Colors and sire-of-sires Chief's Crown.

Newton(IRE) by Danehill(USA) - Elite Guest by Be My Guest(USA) raced in Ireland and France and had 3 wins over 1000-1400m. At 2 he won the Marble Hill Stakes(L) over 1000m and ran forth in the Grade 1 Grand Criterium over 1400m. At 3 he won the Lochbrown Stakes (L) over 1400m and second in the Grade 3 Killavullan Stakes over 1400m. He also placed in the Grade 3 Tetrarch Stakes (1400m) and the Grade 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains over 1600m, and a place in the Grade 1 Irish 2000 Guineas over 1600m.

Newton's third dam has produced Grade 1 winner and sire Saddler's Hall, and Grade 1 St Leger and Epsom Oaks winner Sun Princess, who in turn is the dam of Prince Of Dane and includes the family of Spectrum(IRE).

Newton has had winners from his first crop to race in South Africa, namely Sir Newton, who has had 11 starts with 2 wins and 5 places to date, and Ruby King (13 starts - 2 wins and 7 places).

Zirconeum

Warwick describes Newton as: "Very typical of his sire Danehill and was a very decent race horse in his day. "His first crop were two year olds this season.
Due to his arriving very late at stud -his principal shareholders did not have mares for him so he got a lot of maidens off the track. Nevertheless he got off to a very respectable start ending just two places behind a horse of the standing of Muhtafal on the sires of two year olds log and of all his runners to date there is only one that has not earned a cheque - with Sir Newton he had his first feature race winner.
For us this is all very promising for the crop of foals he has in the next two crops are we believe of a superior quality."

King's Chapel(NZ) is the newest addition to the stallion band at Bush Hill Stud. By King of Kings(IRE) - Lower Chapel by Sharpo(GB) he had 10 wins in New Zealand and Australia and was Horse of the Year at 3, a Champion 3 year old and Champion Sprinter/Miler in New Zealand with a Rated Timeform of 123. He was rated equal to the great Sunline and the third highest rated horse to come out of New Zealand in the last thirty five years.

Starting his career as a 2 year old, he won the Super Bonus Classique (Listed) over 1200 metres. At 3, he won the Grade 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas over 1600m, the Grade 1 Telegraph Handicap (1200m), the Grade 1 Weight For Age Stakes (1400m) and the Listed Ray Coupland Stakes over 1400m. In each of these Grade 1 wins he broke or equalled the track records. In addition to this he placed in two other Grade 1's and a stakes race. He proved himself to be a sound, precocious and courageous individual, with plenty of speed.

King's Chapel has enjoyed some success at stud in New Zealand with three crops to run in New Zealand to date. In his first crop of current four year olds he had the very smart Grade 2 winner King's Ransom, and the stakes placed Star of Kings. He also has current stakes winning 3 year old Princess Emmy, and from only 5 runners to date, current leading 2 year old filly Lady Chapel. In his 4 year old crop he has achieved a rate of 50% winners to runners.
