Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale KZN Results Day Two Share

The 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale entered its second and final day on Sunday with 217 yearlings coming under the hammer. In total, 467 yearlings were catalogued, the aggregate was R81 750 000 and the average for a yearling sold was R240 441 .

The top priced KZN-bred colt on the second day was Lot 316, Marino Casino, a half-brother to all time leading winner Hear The Drums (with 35 wins) who recently retired to Summerhill Stud. Marino Casino is also the highest price achieved for the now deceased Stronghold and he was sold by Summerhill Stud as an agent for R300 000.

Peter Blythe described the overall sale as "a very tough sale. In sales in years gone by, we may have gotten more." The top priced KZN-bred filly was Lot 302, a beautiful bay filly from Clifton Stud named Whatalady by Jet Master out of Vogue by Model Man. Peter Blythe adds: "She was very nice filly that attracted a lot of attention." She is half-sister to Grade 1 winner Fort Vogue (a R2.2 million yearling himself) who died unexpectedly in Dubai earlier this year. The filly sold for R600 000 to Mr L Wernars.

Atso had a good day with his top-selling colt, Lot 283, named Hamley's On Regent bred and consigned by Scott Bros. Out of the Argentinian mare Toyshop by Roy, the colt sold to Gareth Pepper for R280 000. The colt descends from an Argentinian family that includes plenty of Bold-Black Type including Potrizaris(ARG), Horse of the Year & Champion 3YO Filly in Argentina, as well as Potridee(ARG), Champion 2YO Filly in Argentina.

The other colt from Atso came from Clifton Stud, Lot 415 named Risky Rosco. Said Peter Blyth: "I sold my Atso for R220 000 and I was happy with that. He was a beautiful colt who came in for high praise; a lot of people were chasing him." A flashy looking chestnut colt out of the mare Dolphin Beach by Special Preview, he is a half-brother to East Beach, a Grade 3 winner in Zimbabwe. Atso has already sired a winner from just two runners to start.

Seven consecutive Champion Breeders of South Africa, Summerhill Stud, acting as Agent, sold their Australian colt Royal Trump for R1 million. The colt is by Galileo's son Teofilo out of Trumps by Catrail. He sold to John Freeman.

A.P. Arrow sold his highest priced yearling to date, Lot 399 named Piper Arrow, for R220 000. He is out of Cresent Star by National Assembly and was released by Gary Alexander Racing Stables. Piper Arrow is a half-brother to three winners and descends from the family of Vino Rosa, Blushing Moon, Majestic Crown and Summer Guest.

Scott Bros resident stallion Miesque's Approval's top seller of the sale was a filly named Call of The Hunt (Lot 239) - a half-sister to Vodacom Durban July winner Hunting Tower out of the mare Stirrup Cup. She was bred and consigned by Scott Bros and sold to P. De Beyer.

Backworth Stud sold the highest priced Muhtafal of the sale, Lot 106, an imposing chestnut colt named Lucky Break to Mrs Mary Liley for R650 000. The colt is a half-brother to another Backworth-bred Raise The Bar, out of the mare Moving On Up by Jallad. Raise The Bar is a six-time winner (including the Nkosazana Stakes Listed) and has placed ten times, earning himself over R510 000. The second dam is Grade 3 winning Eternal Dancer with other Black-type winners including Chattaronga, Red Butler and Magnepoise.

Backworth were also responsible for selling the highest priced son of champion sire Kahal on the second and final day of the sale; Lot 390 named Private Game, for R260 000 to the Equine Group. Out of the mare Collection Prive by Dominion Royale, the colt descends from a smart female line that includes two Durban July winners - Right Prerogative and Big Charles.

The top-selling daughter of Kahal came from Summerhill Stud as agent - a filly named Cousin Anne out of the mare Cousin Linda by Badger Land. She was lot 398, and full-sister to Uncle Tommy - a yearling that sold for R2.4 million. This is the family of Rebel King, Lucy's Lad, Acacia Woodland and Cousin John. Greenhill Farm consigned Lot 374, Catch A Queen, the top-seller by King Of Kings out of Catch Twenty Two by Imperial Dilemma, sold to H.E. Adamson for R170 000. Earlier this year, King Of Kings was the reigning National Sire of Two Year Olds by Stakes earned. The filly is a half-sister to Phunyuka - the Grade 2 Emerald Cup winner and Grade 3 placed Aces Wild. This is the family of Al Nitak, Shoe Express, Jessamine, sire The Sheik and Bianconi. King Of Kings sired Grade 2 SA Fillies Nursery winner King's Temptress at Turffontein on Saturday.

The next sale is of course the KZN Yearling Sale at Suncoast Casino on 5 and 6 July. With the exciting new incentives such as the KZN Breeders Cup to be run next year on July day for a stake of R1 million, for any horse that passes through the sale this year, it is a large incentive to buy at the upcoming KZN Yearling Sale. The KZN Breeders Race Day, including the KZN Breeders Million Mile will be run on 1 July 2012 at Greyville, with an increased stake from R250 000 to R1 million.
