Uncle Tommy Storms Home To Take Listed Highveld Sand Challenge Summerhill's Kahal gelding, Uncle Tommy, smashed a field of sand specialists with two Gr2 Emerald Cup winners finishing second and third respectively - Pylon (by Fort Wood) and multiple Group winner by Kahal - The Mouseketeer, bred by Bush Hill Stud. Uncle Tommy finished third in the 2013 Emerald Cup and could be back in this race later this year based on his form. Producing a superior finish to win the R200 000 Listed Highveld Sand Challenge at the Vaal under Richard Fourie, Uncle Tommy is trained by Weiho Marwing for owner Hassen Adams. Jockey Richard Fourie said that Uncle Tommy was usually sluggish out of the gates but that he had shown enthusiasm as he cut to the inside and found a match winning rails position from his seventh draw. “It was a great effort and he found the position down the inside on his own. He is a lovely horse. Pylon wasn’t going as comfortably as one would have expected when I moved up to him and Uncle Tommy kept finding all the way,” he enthused. Bred by Summerhill Stud, Uncle Tommy is by Kahal out of the prolific one time winning Badger Land mare, Cousin Linda. A R2,4million yearling - Uncle Tommy is a half-brother to Rebel King. The son of Kahal was originally trained by Mike Bass and then Darryl Hodgson, and he has subsequently won a further ten races for Hassen Adams. A winner of 11 of his 45 starts with 19 places, Uncle Tommy took his stake earnings to R1 067 515. The Mouseketeer has a full-brother available at the upcoming Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, bred and consigned by Bush Hill Stud. The smart bay colt named Aramouse is consigned as Lot 412. One of South Africa’s most consistent sires, Kahal has been represented by five stakes horses this season, including the top-class mare Classic Illusion and last season with Festival Of Fire. Ahead of the likes of Trippi, Fort Wood and Judpot on the general sires log, Kahal is the sire of 32 stakes winners to date - 19 of them individual Grade One horses including Love Struck, Noble Heir, Desert Links, Spiced Gold and Chocolicious - the latter bred by Backworth Stud and sold in foal to Champion Frankel.
