KZN-bred Futura opened his Champion Season account at Greyville on the weekend, notching up his eighth win from 12 starts in his first warm up run of the season over 1600m. Futura has never been out of the money from 12 starts.

Drawn second and carrying 61.5kgs on a par with Kochka and Hot Ticket, Futura looked to be enjoying himself under a confident ride from Sean Cormack, accelerating with ease and not over exerting himself to win by a quarter of a length from a fast finishing Night Trip and Ze Kaiser in the Pinnacle Stakes.

All eyes are on the triple Gr1 winner and favourite for the Vodacom Durban July, now in the care of Justin Snaith for owners John Freeman, Jack Mitchell and Gaynor Rupert of Drakenstein Stud. Drakenstein have another Champion KZN-bred by Dynasty in their broodmare band, the brilliant Beach Beauty.

The champion son of Dynasty bred by Guy Murdoch has a three year old half-sister by Miesque's Approval named French Rose, who finished second in her second start over 1600m at Kenilworth for trainer Brett Crawford and owners' Mrs J Crawford, Messrs M S Jolly & P M G Murdoch & Mauritzfontein (Pty) Ltd (Nom: Miss J B Slack).

Sadly Scribblin' The Cat's Ideal World yearling colt passed away shortly before the National Yearling Sale but there is a two year old Fort Wood filly, Hannah Gorgeous, to look forward to.

Carrying strong ties to KZN, Futura was born at Yellow Star Stud and his broodmare sire Badger's Drift stands at Wood Moore Manor Stud in Mooi River. Badger's Drift has the accolade of being a Gr1 winner, producing a Gr1 winner and now the broodmare sire of a Gr1 winner.

After Futura won the Gr1 Champions Cup, Queen's Plate and J&B Met with ease, this year's Vodacom Durban July will be particularly exciting with an incredibly strong field on the cards. Futura ran a huge race in the Vodacom Durban July last year to come from behind in a fast finishing third to the controversial finish between stablemate Legislate and Wylie Hall.

On 10 May the international Longines Worlds Fastest Racehorse Rankings placed Futura 20th, on a par with recent South African Kentucky Derby participant trained by Mike De Kock, Mubtaahij. Futura is merit rated at 119 on the Longines Ranking.

Futura was honoured at the 2014 KZN Breeders Awards, winning the categories of Outstanding 3YO Colt and Outstanding Middle Distance Male.

Congratulations to all concerned.
