KZN National Two Year Old Sale Results

Spring Valley's Var colt out of Venetian Lady by Captain Al who sold for R450 000
The two day National Two Year Old Sale has concluded and saw Bruce and Delia Le Roux's Spring Valley Stud top the KZN priced Lots over both days, followed by the Scott Bros.
The first day saw Spring Valley sell an Elusive Fort filly for R110 000 to Green Street Bloodstock as Lot 117. The filly is a first foal for Key Prospect by Qui Danzig, from one of Spring Valley's brilliant families from the mare Trade Enquiry. Voted Equus Broodmare Of The Year in 2009, Trade Enquiry produced the likes of Bedloe's Island, Buy And Sell and Count The Money for Spring Valley.
The next to follow on the first day were two fillies sold for R105 000 each from Scott Bros and Hadlow Stud.
Hadlow Stud had an outstanding Kahal filly sell as Lot 187 to Kenyan interests. Named Platinum Card, she is out of Platinum Lass by Jallad, from the family of Princess Victoria and her dam being a half-sister to Cup Of Grace. It is an interesting pedigree as the filly's fourth dam is a half-sister to Petrava, the dam of Jallad.
The other filly from Scott Bros named Honorary [pictured right] is a three-parts sister to Gr1 Gold Cup winner Wild One, a daughter of Mogok out of a half-sister to Wild One (also by Mogok). A lovely eye catching filly with similar facial features to Wild One, she carries a pure Highdown Stud pedigree being out of a Spaceship mare, in turn out of Endangered Species by Sapieha. She sold as Lot 52 to Mark Dixon.
The second day of the National Two Year Old Sale was topped by Spring Valley's outstanding Var colt, out of Venetian Lady by Captain Al. An incredible first foal for the mare who was a winner and a half-sister to Gr3 placed Qui Success. The colt is a descendant of the Argentine "V" family, filled with Group winners. The unnamed Var colt sold for R450 000 to Dean Kannemeyer.
The Scott Bros followed with an outstanding Toreador colt that attracted much attention in the sales yard. Named Matador Man and sold as Lot 212, he went for R180 000 to Mr Z Nassif. His dam Sahara is by Mogok out of Foveros mare Too Much Sun, the dam of six winners. Sahara herself won four times and placed in the Gr2 KZN Fillies Guineas, as well as two Gr3's. It is her second foal to date, the first also being a Toreador.
Spring Valley also sold the top priced Visionaire of the sale, the son of Grand Slam at Summerhill Stud recently crowned National Freshman Sire. Unnamed Lot 284 sold to Tyrone Zackey for R150 000, a lovely colt with plenty of substance, he is out of Australian mare Wild Honey by Star Craft and shares a damline with Green Desert.
Following two tough but brisk days of trading, the sale ended with increases in both average and median prices, while the drop in numbers accounted for a decrease in the sale’s gross aggregate.
The sale achieved an overall aggregate of R20.627 million, with 230 lots selling at an average price of R89 683.
This was an increase on last year’s prices, where the average was R84 383, while the sale’s overall median rose narrowly from R50 000 in 2014 to R52 500.
CEO Kevin Woolward commented, "Good horses fetched good prices, and it was pleasing to see such a broad spectrum of buyers. The increase in both average and median makes for a positive result, particularly given the current state of the economy."
The overall sales topper was a beautiful Var filly who sold to Mr RN Bouwer for R1,1million. The filly named La Roquette sold early in the sale as Lot 107, bred and consigned by Varsfontein Stud. She is out of Jodie by Western Winter, from the immediate family of Ice Cube and Jagged Ice.
The Fillies For Stud offered at the end of the sale was topped by Lot 311 Miss K [pictured left], a 9-time winning daughter of Kahal out of Blushing Summer by Jallad. She was knocked down to John Freeman for R350 000 from the Louis Goosen Racing Stable.
The second top filly for stud to attract attention was Moggytwoshoes by Mogok out of a Damascus Gate mare, who sold for R80 000 to Varsfontein Stud. The five time winner descends from an old Varsfontein family and also came from the stable of Louis Goosen and it was a goosebump moment when auctioneer Graeme Hawkins knocked his gavel down and announced that the filly was "going home!"
